God at Work- Week 2- Developing a Vision for Vocation
A teaching series of Society Church all about becoming coworkers with God. Developing a theology of vocation or calling for how to integrate your faith and work. This message is about discovering a vision for vocation through creation, cultivation, contentment, and context from the creation narrative in Genesis 1 & 2.
1. Discovering a Vision for Vocation through Creation
We reflect the image of God through our work.
Genesis 1:1- “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.[a] 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters… (The six days of the creation narrative continue through v.25) 26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings[b] in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground. 27 So God created human beings[c] in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
2. Discovering a Vision for Vocation through Cultivation
Work = Chaos -> Creative Cultivation -> Community Contribution.
Genesis 1:28-30 “Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” 29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. 30 And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life. And that is what happened. 31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!”
3. Discovering a Vision for Vocation through Contentment
Discovering contentment through the rhythm of accomplishment and rest
Genesis 1:31-2:2- “Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!… So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. 2 On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested[a] from all his work.”
4. Discovering A Vision for Vocation through Context
In order to find true meaning in our work we must understand its proper context
Genesis 2:15- “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
